The Recognition of Our Own Heart: Ponderings on the Pratyabhijnahrdayam by Joan Ruvinksy
Joan Ruvinsky and Richard Miller were both students of Jean Klein in the late 80s and 90s. As an early supporter of iRest Institute, Joan volunteered her time for many years teaching beside Richard at the 10-day Silent iRest meditation Retreat at the Santa Sabina Center, as well as assisting in the development and delivery of early iRest trainings.
When Joan received a diagnosis of terminal cancer, she began writing a commentary on the Pratyabhijnahrdayam, a text she had translated with a group of iRest Teachers before her diagnosis. Joan was able to finish her book, The Recognition of Our Own Heart: Ponderings of the Pratyabhijnahrdayam, a true culmination of her life’s work, just before her death in 2016.
We are thrilled to announce that The Recognition of Our Own Heart: Ponderings of the Pratyabhijnahrdayam is finally complete and available for purchase. Joan’s commentary on the text makes this primer of Kashmir Shaivism extremely accessible. She writes about its practical applications in our daily lives in a distinctively poetic and down-to-earth fashion. Each verse of the text is accompanied by photos of nature, transmitting in a visceral way the feeling and tone of the text’s verses. This book also includes additional practices to help you experience the teachings of the Pratyabhijnahrdayam in your everyday life.
We honor Joan's wisdom and can’t thank her enough for all she’s done for iRest and our community at large, and we feel grateful that she was able to leave us this incredible offering to cherish, study, and use in her memory.
Additional Learning Opportunities
Over the years many students have asked for additional learning opportunities to deepen their knowledge and experience of iRest and meditation. The resources below are designed to help foster your exploration of Self and open up to the broader experience of your Essential Nature as spacious, timeless, and free.
Upcoming iRest Events
As you know, we hold Workshops, Immersions, and Retreats all year round. The iRest events listed below are designed to help you experience personal growth, spiritual development, peaceful relaxation, and deep healing.
iRest Certification Program
Are you enrolled in the iRest Certification Program? If so, you should know that your participation in this retreat counts toward your long retreat requirement. If you aren’t enrolled in Certification but are already an iRest Level 1 Teacher, you are now eligible to enroll in the program at the discounted price of US$1,600 (regularly US $1,900). Please note, this discount applies until three weeks from the date you received the letter.
Unsure what is involved with the iRest Certification Program? Certification is an intensive, professional level, in-home study program for those passionate about iRest who wish to take their knowledge and teaching to a higher level. During certification you will work one-on-one with a dedicated Certification Supervisor to supplement the program’s in-depth study and practice. Some enter Certification to demonstrate they’ve obtained the highest level of iRest training and earn the designation of Certified iRest Teacher. Others enter Certification to master their own understanding and personal practice of iRest.

Gratitude and Appreciation
We want to share our deepest gratitude and appreciation to those who have donated and continue to donate to iRest Institute. As an educational non-profit, we rely on donations to help keep our programs viable - so we can work to alleviate suffering and share the deeply healing, life affirming practice of iRest with as many people as possible.
Recently your dollars have gone a long way! Because of your donations, we’ve been able to fund numerous scholarships, build a new website, and work to ensure that iRest is as accessible as possible to those in need. But we know our work doesn’t stop here.
To honor our commitment to accessibility and expand our global reach to bring iRest to more people around the globe, we want to share with you a new crowd-sourced fundraising project to translate Richard Miller’s book, Yoga Nidra: A Meditative Practice for Deep Relaxation and Healing to the Japanese language. In this book, Richard shares a practical seven-step program that draws on the ancient teachings of Yoga Nidra to help us learn how to experience spiritual awakening and profound well-being through deep relaxation. We couldn’t be more excited to fulfill the needs of the many Japanese speakers who have asked for this resource, and what better way to make this possible than as a community? If you would like to contribute to this translation and support iRest touching the lives of many, please join us by donating here.
Once again, thank you. All that we’ve accomplished and aim to accomplish wouldn’t be possible without you. If you feel compelled and inspired to help make iRest a part of more people’s lives and wish to make a general donation to iRest Institute, kindly click the button below.
